La Vespa di Vacanze Romane: molto più di uno scooter

Esistono mezzi che nascono per essere guidati. Altri che, con il passare degli anni, sembrano chiedere semplicemente di essere osservati. La Vespa “Vacanze Romane” del 1951 appartiene a questa seconda categoria. È un’opinione, certo. E probabilmente farà discutere. Per molti la Vespa è sinonimo di libertà, di viaggi, di raduni e di chilometri percorsi con il sorriso sotto il casco. È un modo di vivere la strada che merita rispetto e che continua ancora oggi a unire migliaia di appassionati. Ma esiste anche un altro modo di guardarla. Non come un mezzo con cui affrontare centinaia di chilometri, bensì come uno degli oggetti di design più riusciti mai usciti dall’industria italiana. Certo, può ancora essere guidata. Anche se il tempo le ha lasciato qualche capriccio. Per metterla in moto bisogna seguire un piccolo rituale: aprire lo sportello sotto la sella, pompare la benzina, tirare la leva dell’aria e dare un colpo deciso alla pedivella. La cosa sorprendente è che, anche dopo essere rimasta ferma per un paio d’anni, spesso torna in vita al primo colpo. È successo anche poco tempo fa. Prima di girare una video intervista insieme a Ettore ed Emanuele, guardando la Vespa, Ettore sorrise e disse: “Secondo me oggi non partirà.” La risposta arrivò pochi secondi dopo. Un colpo di pedivella. Il motore prese vita immediatamente. Come se quei lunghi periodi di inattività non fossero mai esistiti. In fondo, sotto quell’aspetto, non aveva mai tradito. Terminata la giornata di riprese, la Vespa ci accompagnò fino a cena tra le colline della Franciacorta, al Dossello. Un ristorante che merita davvero una visita. Cucina eccellente, atmosfera elegante e quel senso di ospitalità che oggi non è così scontato. Il proprietario, che ogni tanto si vede sfrecciare a bordo di una splendida Alfa Romeo Duetto rossa, sembra vivere la Franciacorta con lo stesso stile senza tempo della Vespa. Il ritorno, però, è stato tutta un’altra storia. Era ormai buio. Il piccolo faro della Vespa illuminava appena un metro davanti alla ruota. Attraversare le strade di campagna, circondati dai vigneti e con così poca luce, è stata probabilmente la parte più intensa dell’intera giornata. Affascinante, sì. Ma anche sufficiente per ricordare che alcune emozioni è meglio viverle ogni tanto, non ogni fine settimana. Chi ama utilizzarla per viaggi medio-lunghi, affrontare raduni e macinare chilometri probabilmente non sarà d’accordo. Ed è giusto così. Per molti la Vespa nasce proprio per questo. Per altri, invece, il piacere sta nel conservarla, accenderla di tanto in tanto, ascoltare il rumore del suo motore e poi lasciarla tornare al suo posto. Perché il suo valore, oggi, non dipende più dalla distanza che può percorrere. Dipende da ciò che riesce a trasmettere. Basta osservarla. Le sue curve. Il colore. Le proporzioni. Quella semplicità che ancora oggi riesce a sembrare moderna. Ci sono motociclette che emozionano quando sono in movimento. La Vespa “Vacanze Romane”, invece, riesce a emozionare anche da ferma. Ha superato il concetto stesso di mezzo di trasporto. È diventata cinema. È diventata cultura. È diventata un simbolo riconosciuto in tutto il mondo. Ed è forse per questo che oggi sembra appartenere più a un museo che a una strada. Più a uno studio di architettura che a un garage. Più a un ambiente capace di valorizzarla che a un parcheggio qualsiasi. Ci sono oggetti che arredano uno spazio. Altri che raccontano una storia. La Vespa “Vacanze Romane” riesce a fare entrambe le cose. È una di quelle creazioni che non hanno bisogno di stupire con le prestazioni o con la tecnologia. Le basta esserci. Perché il vero fascino delle icone non è quello di correre più veloce o di arrivare più lontano. È quello di fermare il tempo. E la Vespa “Vacanze Romane”, da oltre settant’anni, continua a riuscirci.

Lo ammetto subito: parto di parte. Nel mio garage c’è un’Audi TT Roadster prima serie, un’auto che negli stessi anni si contendeva il mercato proprio con la BMW Z3. Una precisazione importante: il confronto che leggerete non è tra la BMW Z3 M e l’Audi TT da 225 CV. Sarebbe un paragone ingiusto. Sto parlando della BMW Z3 1.9 e della mia Audi TT Roadster 1.8 Turbo da 179 CV, due versioni molto più vicine per prestazioni e posizionamento sul mercato. Due filosofie completamente diverse, due designer diversi, due modi opposti di interpretare la spider compatta.

Da ragazzo c’era un’auto che occupava ogni mio pensiero. La Porsche. Non una Porsche qualsiasi, ma quel mondo fatto di motori boxer, linee senza tempo e una storia costruita in pista prima ancora che sulla strada. Ho sempre amato il marchio. Dalla 356, che in America veniva scelta anche per correre perché era leggera, affidabile e relativamente accessibile, fino alle 911 degli anni Settanta, che mi riportano ai ricordi di mio padre, un altro grande appassionato Porsche.
